Melt gear pumps have a theoretical flow rate, just like we figure out how much water is in a bucket full of water. It is estimated based on the size and number of gears in the pump and how fast it turns.
Theoretically the pump can pump how much melt per minute, this calculation is an ideal value. But in reality, the melt gear pump does not work so perfectly, because there will be some small gaps inside the pump, these gaps will allow some of the melt leakage, will not be exactly in accordance with the theoretical amount of flow out, so the actual flow rate is the amount of melt that can be pumped out per minute when the pump is really working, and it will be a little less than the theoretical one.
In order to know the actual flow rate more accurately, people will use a thing called volumetric efficiency to adjust the theoretical flow rate calculation results. The volumetric efficiency tells us how much melt is lost due to leakage, and we can then subtract this from the theoretical flow rate to get a more realistic flow rate figure.
